The Canadian Trans Youth Health Survey (CTYHS) is a comprehensive study that sheds light on the mental health of transgender youth in Canada. The results are alarming, with nearly two-thirds of participants having self-harmed or seriously considered suicide – 64 percent, to be exact. The survey emphasizes the importance of supportive families and safe schools in preventing suicidal thoughts among transgender youth.
The study found that young people from unsupportive families were eight times more likely to attempt suicide than those with supportive families. Additionally, students who attended schools with policies protecting gender identity had significantly lower rates of suicidal ideation and self-harm than those without such policies. These findings underscore the importance of creating safe spaces for transgender youth both at home and in school environments.
