The results of the Canadian Trans Youth Health Survey revealed a stark reality for trans youth in Canada. Over two-thirds of respondents reported experiencing severe emotional distress, highlighting the urgent need for support and resources for this vulnerable population. However, the survey also found that there were factors associated with lower levels of distress, such as having supportive families, attending safe schools, and obtaining legal name changes.

Among the 1,519 participants aged 14 to 25 who completed the survey, nearly half (47%) had seriously considered suicide in the past year. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for mental health services specifically designed to address the unique challenges faced by trans youth. The survey also found that trans youth who experienced family rejection or lacked access to affirming healthcare were more likely to experience high levels of emotional distress.
